I took math all through high school, up through calculus. Then I took another advanced math class in college, which was a requirement. Since then, I have never had to utilize any math beyond basic algebra. It’s pretty clear that politicians and businessmen have ulterior motives for encouraging the “STEM” professions. Meanwhile, there are classic works of literature that schools used to assign by the 6th grade, that at this point most adults haven’t even read. We are trading cultural illiteracy for, maybe, a slight improvement in math skills. This article is so refreshing because it’s written by a math teacher. For once, someone who isn’t trying to elevate or exaggerate the importance of his own chosen profession.
